Social protection programmes in the MENA region face gender gaps, age gaps and urban-rural gaps: many people remain excluded from these programmes. This thesis is divided into three chapters, each dealing with one of the region’s social protection programmes (fuel subsidies, an education programme and a joint savings programme). The general problem of my thesis is as follows: what perspective for effective social protection policies for populations in vulnerable situations? In the first chapter, I will analyse the effects of fuel subsidy reforms on energy consumption, socio-economic well-being and trust in government. In a second chapter, I will analyse the factors that explain the heterogeneous effects of the treatment of a conditional cash transfer in education. Finally, in the last chapter, I will analyse the effects of a group savings programme designed to help elderly women cope with their health shock.
